Ty Coed Eco Lodge

Ty Coed ( The Wooden House ). A beautiful self catering lodge located in one of the most spectacular parts of Wales. Powered by the sun and biomass fuel, everything is environmentally friendly.

The river Marteg flows through the large garden. Otters live nearby and salmon swim upstream in winter.
The lodge is on the edge of St. Harmon village, just below Gilfach nature reserve and a five minute drive from Elan Valley, the Lake District of Wales.

Ty Coed comfortably sleeps four people in two separate areas. The main building is a purpose built eco lodge in Scandinavian style. Super insulated and warmed by a biomass wood pellet fire which lights at the flick of a switch and provides a superb flame and spark display. Open plan with a fully equipped kitchen (the owner is a chef), a large comfortable lounge area with a big flat screen smart TV (Netflix provided), a superb piano and an office area with printer / scanner / copier. There is unlimited wifi, plenty of books/board games. The south facing conservatory overlooks a large lawned garden with it’s river and abundant wildlife. The conservatory also heats the house on sunny days.  Across the drive, the annexe is really a cosy lodge in itself with it’s own lounge area, smart TV, coffee maker and shower room. Guests can enjoy the main lodge but also have their own private retreat if desired.

The lodge and all it’s contents were designed for eco living.
Designed by the centre for alternative technology in Wales
Built using locally sourced, untreated Larch and Douglas Fir.
Super insulated using “Warmcel” made from recycled cardboard.
Triple glazed with passive solar heating via the conservatory spanning the entire south side.
Biomass wood pellet fire.

4kw of Solar PV panels provide the power. We have an arrangement with a Green Energy supplier. They buy our electricity during the day in exchange for powering us when the sun isn’t shining using 100% sustainable sources. Inside we use all homemade cleaning products mostly made from vinegar, essential oils and borax substitute. All lighting is low energy including the auto solar lighting that glows in the conservatory at night. Appliances have been carefully chosen to be super low energy. Crockery and glasses are all recycled. Even the lawn is Eco with self-fertilizing micro-clover !!

We will be operating a low energy incentive for our guests. If you arrive by bicycle or public transport ( we can pick you up from either the bus or train station ) then we will give you discount on your stay. Discount will also given to anyone using minimum energy. if possible take a shower, use the washing machine, the dishwasher and any other electrical appliance during the day when the sun is shining. After your holiday we will let you know how you have done and will give you a discount for your next stay

By example and practical activity we are helping this area of Wales become more eco minded.
The traditions, communities and social structures of Wales are still here.We talk to local farmers and land owners about green issues in a non-textbook common sense way.

All spending is done locally ..we do not use agencies and give guides to guests, on where to shop locally.
At the moment we are only employing one cleaner but we plan to expand into local woodland management with tourism.

We started Ty Coed Eco lodge with the intention of embracing all of the above and more.
We have achieved this in an entirely practical, example setting way.
