Salinas de guaranda
The remote village of Salinas de Guaranda, is remarkable in a number of ways. Reorganized many years ago by a couple of Italian priests, the community’s economy is thriving in a number of micro-industries. Their activities include cultivating wild mushrooms, weaving traditional alpaca wool jumpers and producing some of the best chocolate to be found anywhere in the country. The hostel, complete with restaurant and a log fire, is up above the market and boasts commanding mountain views.
