Tourism Concern's online exhibitions
Kenyan hotel workers
This exhibition formed a part of our 'Sun, Sand, Sea and Sweatshops' campaign, which focused on exploitative labour conditions within tourism. Our research demonstrated that tourism workers have always been vulnerable and suffer from poor working conditions.
Over 10,000 people added their voice to the campaign, which was so successful that that the Federation of Tour Operators adopted new more stringent, labour condition policies.
However, natural disasters and global terrorism have made their situation even more precarious as these pictures and stories from Kenya, Bali and Thailand demonstrate.

Tsunami of Tourism - India
Small-scale fishing communities have lived and worked on the coastlines of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, Southern India, for time immemorial. The men traditionally go out to sea to fish, either on their own boats or working as ‘coolies’ (labourers), while the women are responsible for drying and selling the catch. See how their lives have been changed by the tourist boom.
Tsunami of Tourism - Sri Lanka
Small-scale fishing communities have lived and worked on the coastlines of Sri Lanka for generations.
Many do not have official title deeds to their land and are being displaced by developers and corrupt politicians.
Destination Tsunami Exhibition
When the tsunami hit South East Asia, devastating coastal communities and taking some 230,000 lives, Tourism Concern immediately became aware of the severity of the impact on local people. Several years on, we ask what happened to the tsunami survivors in India and why are they still suffering.
