Tourism and Climate Change: Have your say in our Moral Maze Debate

MOTION: THE GAINS TO THE HOLIDAY DESTINATION OUTWEIGH THE DAMAGE TO THE PLANET

Read the debating teams' arguments FOR and AGAINST and cast your vote!

The contribution to climate change caused by flying is forcing us all to rethink how we holiday. Some argue that we must simply stop flying, but where would this leave the many communities in the global South that are heavily dependent on tourism? On the other hand, it is the same communities that are already beginning to bear the brunt of the impacts of global warming. How do we balance the needs of people and planet?

Here we present Tourism Concern’s 2008 ‘moral maze’ debate, which grapples with these contentious issues and sets out to explore the relationship between tourism, climate change and development.

Arguing against the motion is Sam Clarke, founder and chair of Stop Climate Chaos. Making the case for is Roger Heape, chair of The Travel Foundation and former chief executive of British Airways Holidays. Both draw on their teams of expert witnesses to convince you of their case.
