Fair trade

Tourism Concern has worked for 10 years to develop the concept and practice of what Fair Trade in Tourism should be and campaigning for a more fairly traded industry where the benefits of tourism are shared with everyone including the poor.

A fairtrade label for tourism?

We are currently working with the International Fairtrade Labelling Organisations to explore the possibility of developing a Fairtrade Label for tourism.

Through our Fair Trade in Tourism work, we are seeking to focus on solutions rather than problems. We are intending to highlight industry initiatives that promote good management and trade practice, facilitating the exchange of ideas amongst the three key stakeholders - tourists, tour operators, and destination communities.

International Fair Trade in Tourism Network

To support this work we set up an International Fair Trade in Tourism Network, an e-based network with 200 tourism initiatives, academic, trade unions, worker organisations and NGO’s from both North and South. Tourism Concern ran a three year consultation process to develop the guidelines and principles for Fair Trade in Tourism through the international Fair Trade in Tourism Network (FTTN).

As part of this project Tourism Concern Gambia hosted a highly successful African Fair Trade conference in the Gambia. More on this soon....
