'Human Zoo' film released
A film showing the Burmese Kayan (also known as Padaung) refugees trapped in tourist villages in northern Thailand has been released on the internet. The film, ‘Human Zoo’, takes its title from the common nickname given to the villages, which are run by Thai nationals. The Kayan refugees are denied Thai citizenship and the rights that this would entail, including the right to work and freedom of movement. On the other hand, the Thai government will not grant the exit visas required for the refugees to take part in the United Nations resettlement programme.
