Demand an end to Water Injustice in Goa

"All these hotels get a good supply of water. We only get water every second day from the public supply and only for a couple of hours. This is hardly enough... the water level is depleting." Donna - local resident.

New research by Tourism Concern and our local partners Eco Footprints and the Centre for Responsible Tourism, has found that poorly regulated tourism development in Goa is impacting negatively upon water availability, accessibility and quality for many local households.
>> Avoid Guilt Trips - what you can do as a concerned tourist...
Our research indicates that there is growing concern among the people of Goa about the ways in which weakly monitored consumption and irresponsible disposal of water by hotels and resorts are:
- depleting groundwater and wells
- polluting waterways and beaches
- appropriating public water supplies to the detriment of communities and livelihoods, including small-scale tourism entrepreneurs
- forcing households to abandon wells and depend on limited and unreliable piped supplies
- undermining the long-term sustainability of tourism development in Goa, upon which so many livelihoods depend
We are calling for the right to water and sanitation of local communities to be prioritised over water for luxury tourism development and tourist leisure.

Dear Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar,
I am deeply concerned to learn that poorly regulated tourism development in Goa is:
- Depleting groundwater and wells
- Polluting waterways and beaches
- Appropriating public supplies to the detriment of communities and livelihoods
- Forcing households to abandon wells and depend on limited and unreliable piped supplies
I call upon the Government of Goa to put the water rights of communities first.
I fully support the Zero Tolerance for Water Injustice Campaign and urge you to implement the recommendations of the report, Reclaiming Water Rights.
Yours sincerely,

If tourism is to be adopted as a means of bringing an income into a country then the income must be used for the benefit of the residents. To deprive residents of resources that would otherwise be available to make individual fortunes is immoral. A government's first duty is to its citizens.

Great idea for a campaign. You should ask people here if they are people who would consider going to Goa as a tourist - might make the Tourism Minister more likely to listen. Put the petition action higher up the page too!

Every single tourist that visits Goa, and every other destination where the situation is an exact replicant, for that matter, should be made aware of this abhorrent situation.

Goa is a poor country with very hot weather. why do we need lawns, golf courses and swimming pools to pander to the wealthy? They are welcome but they should enjoy the natural environment without polluting it.

I travelled through Goa in January 1978 and stayed with a Goan family in Colva beach. Even then people were complaining about the amount of water used by foreign tourists which prevented them from growing their crops.

Eco-tourism should be promoted more than what is at current
