Foreign Office travel advisories
Travel advice by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has proven to have a devastating affect on many of the global tourism destinations it is imposed on. You may think that this is necessary to ensure UK citizens' safety when they go on holiday - but this is not always the case.
Tourism Concern has produced a report highlighting the inconsistencies between travel advisories on destinations and the devastating impacts these have had - impacts which are felt most by the poorest in the communities.
Bali suffered a terrorist attack in 2002 with the FCO advising against "all non-essential travel" - this advice still remains nearly a year and a half later. The effects of this are devastating. Reports have stated that school dropout numbers were approximately 30% for 2003 with income in tourism-related industries cut by 70%. The UK public, the tourism industry and the destinations are all asking for a more open and fair travel advice aimed at reducing the impacts of travel advisories - whilst not putting the public at risk.
Some of the countries affected by Travel Advisories:The Gambia, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Uganda, the Philippines, Tanzania.
